We give our all to every project that we receive, whether it is a small one-off for an individual client or an extensive undertaking for a large company or translation agency. We organise and coordinate multi-disciplinary and multi-lingual teams of trusted colleagues so that we can adapt to your project’s needs.
Company ethics
Etcetera is not your usual translation agency. We are not driven by gaining big profits from outsourcing translations. In fact, we complete most of the work ourselves, only involving other colleagues when the project requires us to. And when we do, we always offer fair rates to our outsourcers because we believe that it is the most ethical way to collaborate with other translation professionals and linguists.
What makes us different?
Since we complete the project ourselves, we cut out the intermediaries. This means we can offer more reasonable rates than traditional translation agencies and build direct and friendly relationships with clients and colleagues alike.
Mari, Carmen o Mari Carmen
Founding partner
Mari, Carmen or Mari Carmen was born in Lora del Río (Seville). She studied Translation and Interpreting at the University of Granada, where she specialised in legal, financial and business translation to go on to become a sworn translator. After realising that she would never really learn a language if she didn’t travel, she moved to Cambridge to perfect her English skills and later ventured over to Russia to learn the language and work as a Spanish teacher in Izhevsk and Saint Petersburg.
She moved back to Spain to start her professional career as a translator. She started in-house at a translation agency in Seville, where she became familiar with different specialisms, including medical and insurance-related texts, and later went freelance.
In 2012, she founded a general partnership, Etcetera S.C., with Juan and Alicia, when she took her first steps in the world of project management and started dabbling with real estate- and architecture-related texts. Some years later, Mari and Juan sadly had to say “adiós” to their colleague Alicia, who took a different career path, and went on to found the limited company Etcetera Traducciones S.L. She now multitasks managing projects, looking after the accounts, and of course, translating!
Juan (de la Cruz)
Founding partner
Juan grew up on the outskirts of Seville. From a very young age, he knew he would be a man of words (or at least, he was sure he didn’t have a way with numbers). He started his degree in Translation and Interpreting at the University of Granada but completed it at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, where he also read a Master’s in Audiovisual Translation.
After living long stints in Toulouse and Cambridge and finishing his studies, he decided to test the water as a freelancer translator, but concluded that it was a tough, lonely business and started searching for a different way of working. He discovered that Mari and Alicia –his friends cum housemates cum classmates– were in the same situation, so they created Etcetera (although Alicia later decided to try her luck elsewhere –we still love you, Alicia).
At Etcetera, not only does he manage projects and translate texts from English, French and Catalan into Spanish, he also looks after audiovisual translations, post-editing of automatic translations and accessible media projects.
